Transfer Students

Each year DU welcomes more than 200 transfer students to our community. Applicants are admitted on a space available basis, once they complete their application, and submit all required transcripts. To make the process as smooth as possible, we've posted our guidelines for transferring credit below. Questions? Please call us at 1-800-525-9495 or 303-871-2036.

Admission Standards for Transfer Students

To be considered for admission, students transferring to DU from another accredited institution must have a competitive grade point average in all college course work. The admission committee looks for:

  • Grades that reflect solid work at the college level-generally "B" grades or better
  • Course work that demonstrates serious intentions
  • We also strongly encourage applicants to complete the Hyde Interview.  Transfer students interested in majoring in Business are required to participate in the Ammi Hyde Interview program.

In addition, we consider any special situation or circumstances that may have influenced your academic performance in college. You must submit official transcripts from each college or university you have attended. If you have not successfully completed 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours), you must also submit your high school transcript and test scores.

For Transfer students interested in the Daniels College of Business:

  • Transfer students interested in majoring in business are required to participate in the Ammi Hyde Interview.
  • Prospective business students should work with the Transfer Coordinator in the Office of Admission regarding additional requirements.  Selection directly into the business program is competitive and admission to the University of Denver does not necessarily guarantee admission to the Daniels College of Business

If you're unsure about your candidacy to the University of Denver, please consult one of our admission counselors.

Transfer Merit Awards

The University of Denver offers a variety of scholarships to qualified students. Academic scholarships and grants are offered through the admission process or by individual academic departments.

If your academic credentials meet various requirements, the Office of Admission will offer you a merit award in your letter of acceptance. Students are automatically considered for merit awards and do not need to submit any additional applications or essays to qualify. The following are annual scholarships awarded to high achieving transfer applicants:

  • Pike’s Peak- $9,000
  • Mt. Evans- $6,000
  • Long’s Peak- $3,000

Minimum Guidelines for Transferability of Credit

Coursework:  Each course must be similar to one taught at DU in order for a student to receive transfer credit.

Grades: A grade of C (2.0) or better in each course is required to be considered for transfer of credit. A grade of C- does not transfer.

Pass/Fail Courses: These can be considered for transfer if the Pass grade equals a C (2.0) or better, but they cannot be used to fulfill common undergraduate requirements.

GPA Calculation: Only grades received at DU will be used to calculate your overall grade point average at the University of Denver.

Accreditation: Courses will only transfer into DU from institutions accredited by recognized accrediting agencies.

Physical Education Credit: A maximum of three hours in three separate activities may be transferable.

Semester/Quarter-Hour Conversion: One semester hour is equivalent to 1.5 quarter hours.

Transfer Limits:

You may transfer a maximum of 138-140 quarter hours (92 semester hours) to DU.
You may transfer a maximum of 90 quarter hours (60 semester hours) from a two-year institution.

The final 45 quarter hours (the senior year) must be completed in residence to receive a degree from DU.

An associate's degree does not transfer as a complete whole; we will evaluate each course individually.

Academic standing in quarter hours:

  • 0-44 First-Year
  • 45-89 Sophomore
  • 90-134 Junior
  • 135+ Senior
