Resources for High School Counselors

There are a variety of students who can find success at the University of Denver.  Students who challenge themselves academically; students who seek to contribute to their community; students who flourish in environments that encourage them to think openly and enact change; students who are committed to making a difference for themselves and others.

DU typically seeks applicants with strong academic abilities, a background of contributions outside the classroom, and a willingness to explore new ideas and concepts.  As the admission team, our goal is to find those whose achievements inside and outside the classroom are remarkable.  We seek students who will thrive in the DU community.

We are committed to providing guidance counselors with updates and information about DU.  We invite you to subscribe to our Guidance Counselor Newsletter, which we email regularly to counselors on our list.  You can also view an archive of past newsletters for the current academic year.

The DU Admission Process

In considering an applicant for admission to DU, a number of factors are taken into consideration.  We review a student's academic achievement, including a review of their GPA, curriculum and scholarly honors.  The admission committee also assess their standardized test scores, considering only the highest score the student submits.  For students who submit multiple scores, we will mix and match sections to create a composite “superscore”.

We are committed to conducting a whole-person assessment, which includes evaluating a student’s extracurricular activities, essay, contributions to their community, and participation in various opportunities.  Included in our whole person assessment is the review of guidance counselor and teacher recommendations.  This is one of the many ways in which your assistance is extremely valuable.

We also consider the results of the Hyde Interview.  Students who apply to DU are strongly encouraged to participate in our Hyde Interview program.  The Hyde Interview provides the admission staff insight into the students which we may not gain from assessing grades and test scores.

Students interested in pursuing a business major can apply to the Daniels College of Business after their first year of study at the University of Denver.  Applications will be accepted each fall quarter only.  Students transferring to DU from other institutions will need to work directly with the Office of Admission transfer coordinator. The selection process is competitive, and admission is not guaranteed. Click here for more information.

Guidance counselors can log in to the DU website and view the status of their students, see their admission decisions, and view what they are missing to complete their application.  If you are not yet in the system, take a quick minute to request access to view your students status.  You can also download our transcript request form here.
